The first ten minutes of a morning set the terms for the rest of it, and most of us hand those minutes to a glowing rectangle full of other people’s emergencies.

Here is a modest counter-proposal: make the tea first. Not because tea is virtuous, but because it is slow in a useful way. A kettle cannot be rushed. Leaves cannot be skipped ahead. The five to seven minutes a proper steep demands are, structurally, unclaimable — you cannot spend them answering anything.

What you do instead is small and surprisingly rare: you stand in your own kitchen, in your own morning, while something warm happens on its own schedule. The aroma arrives before the caffeine does. The window has weather in it. The house makes its noises.

We are not going to pretend this fixes anything large. The messages will still be there — all of them, unfortunately. But you will meet them as a person who has already had one complete experience today, start to finish, on purpose.

The phone survives the wait. It always does.
